Social Capital & Third Place

This blog is a form of social capital because we are all forming relationships with each other and getting to know one another through our posts. Also, all of those relationships form a little community within our class. The knowledge and information we will share with each other throughout this blog is our social capital. We are bridging and bonding in a way. We are bonding because we are all college students and most of us are from the U.S.. However, everyone has different levels of knowledge on the topics we will be covering and we have all had very different experiences which will bring together different cultures and create some bridging as well.

This could be considered a third place in some aspects. The most obvious characteristic of this blog that is consistent with Third Place is that conversation is the main focus. We are all able to give our thoughts and comment on the thoughts of others. It is also accessible to all of us at any time.

  1. Lauren, I agree with your thoughts regarding this blog as a form of social capital because it will allow us to get to know one another while bridging across our various social groups, backgrounds, etc. I think that it will allow our class to bond more than most undergraduate courses because I feel people often feel more free to say what they want online since it serves as a leveler, which is something I think you forgot to mention in your post regarding blogs as a third place. Overall, however, I think you did a good job discussing these issues

  2. I agree that through posting or "blogging" we will form our own type of community and third place. Hopefully as we all get more comfortable with eachother, we will feel free to not only say what we feel through a blog, but in discussion out loud as well!

  3. I really like your views as the blog providing social capital, in both ways, bridging and bonding. Both forms of social capital are very important even though they are very different in achieving. We also definitely are creating a solid community, more so than other classes we may be enrolled in. Nice insight.
